What the rules say about tieflings
The SRD 5.2.1 describes tieflings as touched by a fiendish legacy, Abyssal, Chthonic or Infernal, which grants a damage resistance and a set of spells. It says nothing about how tieflings are named.
Everything below about how tieflings are named is our own design for your table, made for fifth edition play. Treat it as a starting point and change what does not fit your world.
How tiefling naming works here
Tiefling characters tend to be named in one of two ways, and this generator does both. The first is a name in the sound of the legacy. Infernal names are ordered and Latin-flavored (-ius, -ia). Abyssal names are jagged, with z, k and gh. Chthonic names are hushed, with th, m and n. The setting is a sound choice; your actual legacy is picked on the character sheet.
The second way is a plain word used as a name, such as Candor, Lantern or Vesper. It suits a tiefling who grew up among people who never learned a fiendish language, or who chose a new name. Family names here are ordinary place and craft words, because a surname usually comes from the people who raised the character.
The 4 styles
- Infernal. Ordered, ornate, Latin-flavored names.
- Abyssal. Jagged, heavy names with z, k and gh.
- Chthonic. Hushed, underworld names with th, m and n.
- Word names. A plain word as a name: a virtue, a trinket, a small odd thing.
Picking a name for your tiefling
- Decide who raised the character first. A tiefling raised in a farm village probably has a village surname and a word name; one raised in a cult-like household may have a long legacy name.
- Word names are easy to say at the table, which helps when other players are still learning everyone's names.
- Add a nickname for the name other people actually use. A formal Infernal name with a short nickname feels lived in.
- Try one name from each legacy sound and keep the one you can imagine a friend shouting across a battlefield.
Use in creator sends a result to the character creator, and the finished character opens in the character sheet.
Questions about tiefling names
What is a word name?
A name taken from an everyday word, such as a quality or an object. Switch the setting to Word names to see ours.
Which legacy sound should I pick?
The sound is separate from the legacy on your sheet. Pick whichever suits the story, even if it does not match your mechanical choice.
Is there a rule for naming tieflings?
No. The SRD describes tiefling abilities, not naming customs. What we offer is a set of styles you can use or ignore.
Can the generator make a family name too?
Yes. It is on by default and uses place and craft words like Thornfield or Ashgate. Untick it for a single name.
