Tavern name generator
Tavern and inn names for your campaign, shaped by mood, region and price, with an optional hook so the first question about the place already has an answer.

How the names and hooks are made
Names are built from word lists we wrote, in six shapes: The Adjective Noun, The Noun and Noun, The Noun's Rest, the keeper's name plus a place word, The Number Nouns, and a short name with Inn or Tavern added. Mood picks the adjectives (a cozy place gets Snug and Mended, a shady one gets Hooded and Borrowed), region picks the nouns (Anchor and Buoy on the coast, Pickaxe and Cairn in the mountains), and price tier keeps Rusty out of a fine inn and Gilded out of a dive.
The hook is one short paragraph: who runs the place, what it is known for, one quirk and what a room is like. The keeper's name is the same one in the tavern's name, when the name uses one. Roll the hook again on any row to keep the name and change the rest.
The generator needs no particular rules, so it suits a fifth edition table and any other fantasy game.
Using a tavern at the table
- Use the hook as three facts you can improvise from: the keeper, the specialty, the quirk. That is enough for the first five minutes in the room.
- Pick the price tier to match the party's purse. A cheap dive and a fine inn pull a table in different directions, and the name tells the players which one they walked into.
- Run two taverns in one town with opposite moods, so the players have a choice and a reason to talk to both keepers.
- If a name gives you an idea, lock it with Keep name, then roll hooks until one fits.
Questions about tavern names
Do the names ever copy famous inns from books or games?
No. A test blocks a list of well-known venue names, and the names come from our own word lists.
What does the price tier change?
It changes the words in the name and the last line of the hook, about what a room is like. It does not set prices, because those are up to your table.
Can I get a name without the hook?
Yes. The hook is off by default. Tick "Add a one-line hook" to include it.
Why add Inn or Tavern to a name?
Some tables want the venue word in the name. The option adds one that fits the price tier, like Taproom for a cheap place or Manor for a fine one.
Names for the people inside
The keeper in each hook gets a name from our human generator. For the rest of the room, try dragonborn, tiefling, elf, dwarf, halfling, gnome, orc, human, or goliath names. The name generators page explains how every generator works.
