What the rules say about goliaths
The SRD 5.2.1 describes goliaths as descended from giants, with a giant ancestry (cloud, fire, frost, hill, stone or storm), extra speed and a power to grow larger. It does not describe how goliaths are named.
Everything below about how goliaths are named is our own design for your table, made for fifth edition play. Treat it as a starting point and change what does not fit your world.
How goliath naming works here
The structure here is three parts. A birth name runs two or three syllables, with open vowels and a few firm consonants, like Kaenathai or Orakaok. A deed name is hyphenated and tells what the goliath did, like Bridge-Holder or Pass-Walker. A clan name is two ordinary words joined, like Ridgemarker or Skyhauler, as if translated from a longer language.
The giant ancestry in the rules is a good source of deed names. A stone goliath might be Cairn-Mender, a frost one Blizzard-Crosser. That match is optional; the generator rolls from a general list of mountain and weather deeds.
Picking a name for your goliath
- Start with just a birth name, then add a deed name after the character does something worth naming.
- Choose a deed that other characters can witness. It makes a good first-session hook.
- For a clan of goliaths, lock the clan name and roll the birth names.
- Long birth names are fine for introductions, but set a short form for the table.
Use in creator sends a result to the character creator, and the finished character opens in the character sheet.
Questions about goliath names
Do goliaths always have deed names?
The rules do not say. We offer them as an optional style, so you can leave the nickname unticked for a name without one.
Does my giant ancestry change the names?
No. It is a rules choice on your sheet. The sound and deed settings are separate and purely flavor.
Why are the clan names in English?
They read like translations of a longer clan name. If you prefer the original, type your own and lock it.
Are these birth names from a published book?
No. They are built from syllable tables we wrote, and the test suite checks that nothing from a published name list is produced.
