What each pick fills in on the sheet
| Pick | Fills in |
|---|---|
| Class | Hit Die, level 1 hit points (the Hit Die's top number plus your Constitution modifier), saving throws, weapon and armor training, level 1 features, spellcasting ability and spell slots |
| Background | Two skills, a tool, an Origin feat, the ability boosts and a starting pack |
| Species | Size, speed, darkvision, traits and any species skill or feat |
| Skills | Proficient skills, plus Expertise for a rogue |
| Ability scores | All six scores with boosts added, so every modifier, save and skill bonus on the sheet |
| Equipment | Armor Class, attack rows with bonus and damage, gear list and gold |
A few rules show up in the numbers. A dwarf gets 1 extra hit point. Alert adds your proficiency bonus to initiative. A barbarian or monk without armor uses Unarmored Defense. Chain mail needs Strength 13, or your speed drops by 10 feet. A fighter with the Defense style gets +1 AC in armor, and Archery adds 2 to ranged attacks. Humans start with Heroic Inspiration.
What you still choose on the sheet: your spells, your languages, weapon mastery picks, and anything bought with starting gold. The Notes box lists each of these so nothing gets missed.
Which rules this uses
Every option comes from the System Reference Document 5.2.1, the free version of the 2024 fifth edition rules released under a Creative Commons license. That document has 12 classes, 9 species, 4 backgrounds and 4 Origin feats, so that is exactly what you can pick here. Subclasses start at level 3, so a level 1 character doesn't need one yet.
The short descriptions on each choice are our own summaries, written to help you decide. They are not the full rules text; your table's rulebook has the details. The starting gear lists, hit points, Standard Array by Class suggestions and Armor Class math follow the SRD tables. This creator only builds SRD 5.2.1 characters, so new sheets are set to the 5.2.1 rules for rests.
Questions
Does this make D&D characters?
It makes level 1 characters for fifth edition using the options in the free SRD 5.2.1 (the 2024 rules): 12 classes, 9 species, 4 backgrounds and the Origin feats. The finished character opens in our character sheet, which tracks hit points, slots and rests during play.
Why only four backgrounds?
Acolyte, Criminal, Sage and Soldier are the backgrounds in the free SRD 5.2.1. Other backgrounds are in books we can't copy from. If your table uses one, pick the closest here and change the skills, feat and gear on the sheet.
Can I change things after I finish?
Yes. Everything lands in the normal character sheet as plain fields, so you can edit any number, skill or note there. Running the creator again makes a new character and leaves the old one alone.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. Your picks are saved in this browser while you work, and the finished character is saved on this device with your other sheets. There is no account and nothing is uploaded.
