What the rules say about dragonborn
The SRD 5.2.1 describes dragonborn as descended from dragons, with a draconic ancestor (ten kinds, from black to white), a breath weapon, damage resistance and darkvision. It does not say what dragonborn call themselves.
Everything below about how dragonborn are named is our own design for your table, made for fifth edition play. Treat it as a starting point and change what does not fit your world.
How dragonborn naming works here
The naming style here is ours: a given name that sounds like a short oath, and a longer clan name that carries history. Given names run two to four syllables and lean on hard stops (k, x, th, z) and closers like -ax, -ia and -eth. Clan names run three or four syllables, because a clan name is what a dragonborn recites when introducing themselves.
Your draconic ancestor does not decide the name, but it can steer it. Some players match a name's sound to the color of their ancestor, soft for silver or white, hard for red or black. That is a style choice, not a rule, and the sound filter does it in one tap.
Picking a name for your dragonborn
- Say it aloud before you commit. Dragonborn names are long and the table will shorten yours, so pick the short form you like and put it on the sheet as a nickname.
- Keep the clan name even if you rarely use it. Introducing yourself with the full clan once, in the first session, is a good scene.
- Clanmates and siblings share a clan name. Tap the clan name on any result to lock it, then generate again to roll new given names for the whole family.
- If a name is hard to say, ask the table to try it once and move on. Most groups settle on a short version within a session.
Use in creator sends a result to the character creator, and the finished character opens in the character sheet.
Questions about dragonborn names
Do dragonborn have first and last names?
The rules do not say. The style this generator uses is a given name plus a longer clan name. Turn the clan name off for a single name.
Should the name match my draconic ancestor?
No rule connects them. The sound filter lets you lean soft or harsh if you want the name to echo your ancestor, but it is flavor only.
How do I say these names?
Each name has a suggested pronunciation under it, with capital letters on the stressed syllable. These are invented names, so there is no official way to say them.
Can I use the names in my game or writing?
Yes. The names come from tables we wrote for this site, and you are free to use them in your own games, notes and stories.
