64-team bracket

Sixty-four lines, six rounds, 63 games. Most people who need one are running either a big fundraiser or a ranking bracket: 64 movies, songs or snacks, decided one head-to-head vote at a time. Both work here. Print the blank in two halves, or open it in the generator to fill in names and click winners.

One page cannot hold 64 readable lines, so the default here is two pages: the top 32 and the bottom 32, each with its own rounds down to a semifinal and the final. The single-page version is there for a poster print or a PDF you zoom into. The double elimination sheet runs to twelve waves of games; treat it as a map, and run the event itself in the generator.

The ranking bracket game

A ranking bracket settles an argument with the whole room voting. It is a great fit for 64 because six rounds of quick votes take about half an hour, and the late rounds are close calls everyone has an opinion on.

  1. Pick a theme everyone knows: holiday movies, theme park rides, breakfast cereals, songs from one decade, family vacation spots.
  2. List 64 entries. Put the obvious favorites first as seeds 1 to 8 if you want them kept apart until late, or use a random draw for chaos.
  3. Read each pairing out loud. Show of hands, or thumbs up and down; the host taps the winner.
  4. Shrink the field fast: round 1 votes take about 15 seconds each. Give the semifinals and the final a short debate first.
  5. Share the link afterwards so everyone can see how their favorite went out.

Fewer than 64 ideas? A 32 or 16 entry ranking bracket plays the same way, and anything in between gets byes for the top seeds. For a tie in a vote, spin a coin or the wheel spinner rather than voting again.

Byes for 33 to 63 entries

Over 32 entries needs the 64-line bracket. Every missing entry becomes a bye for a top seed, spread evenly across the four 16-line quarters.

604seeds 1 to 428 games among seeds 5 to 6059118 or 119
631seed 131 games among seeds 2 to 6362124 or 125

With 40 entries, 24 of them skip round 1, so only 8 first-round games are played. When more than half the field has a bye, round 1 works like a play-in round: tell the teams with byes when round 2 starts so they are not standing around for an hour.

Modified double elimination (two games guaranteed)95 (+1)273 h
Double elimination126 (+1)2125 h

"(+1)" is the grand final's second game, played only if the team from the second bracket wins the first one. A wave is a set of games that can be played at the same time.

Round 1 alone is 32 games. On 16 boards with 20-minute games, single elimination takes about 2 h 20 min; on 8 boards about 3 h 20 min. Double elimination is about 5 h even on 16 boards and about 7 h 20 min on 8, so it only suits a two-day event. Modified double elimination (95 or 96 games) keeps the promise of two games per team in less time.

For leagues, pool play is the other route: 16 groups of four, then the group winners in a 16-team bracket, or the top two in a 32-team one. Every team plays three group games. Set it up in the round robin and pool play generator, then send the group finishers to the bracket.

64-team bracket questions

How many games are in a 64-team bracket?

63 in single elimination. Double elimination needs 126, or 127 if the grand final is played twice, which is why most 64-team events use single elimination or pool play.

How many rounds is a 64-team bracket?

Six: 32 games in round 1, then 16, 8, 4, 2 and the final. The winner has to win six in a row.

What if I have 48 teams?

Use the 64-line bracket with 16 byes for seeds 1 to 16. Only 16 first-round games are played, and from round 2 on the bracket is full.

Can I use a 64-team bracket to rank songs, movies or snacks?

Yes. Put 64 entries in as the "teams", seed them or draw them at random, and let the room vote on each pairing. The generator moves the winners on and keeps the whole bracket in a share link, so you can spread the voting over a week.

Smaller brackets: 8 teams, 16 teams, 32 teams. Up to 128 entries fit in the tournament bracket generator. More ways to decide things as a group are in our randomizers.
