32-team bracket
A 32-team bracket is an event, not a party game: 31 games in single elimination and 62 in double, so the number of courts or boards decides your format. Print the blank bracket on two pages so names stay readable, or run it live in our generator with numbered games and a share link for every player.

On one sheet, 32 lines get small. The two-page option prints the top 16 lines on the first page and the bottom 16 on the second, each with its own path to the semifinal, which is how most wall charts at tournaments are hung. The double elimination sheet is for reference and big paper; for a live event, run it in the generator and print the filled-in bracket as it goes.
Byes for 17 to 31 teams
Anything above 16 teams needs the 32-line bracket. The fewer teams you have, the more byes, and at 17 teams almost the whole field waits while one game is played. The common counts:
| Teams | Byes | Who gets one | Round 1 games | Single elim. games | Double elim. games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 17 | 15 | seeds 1 to 15 | 16 v 17 | 16 | 32 or 33 |
| 20 | 12 | seeds 1 to 12 | 16 v 17, 13 v 20, 15 v 18, 14 v 19 | 19 | 38 or 39 |
| 24 | 8 | seeds 1 to 8 | 8 games among seeds 9 to 24 | 23 | 46 or 47 |
| 28 | 4 | seeds 1 to 4 | 12 games among seeds 5 to 28 | 27 | 54 or 55 |
| 30 | 2 | seeds 1 and 2 | 14 games among seeds 3 to 30 | 29 | 58 or 59 |
| 31 | 1 | seed 1 | 15 games among seeds 2 to 31 | 30 | 60 or 61 |
Byes always go to the top seeds and are spread over the bracket: with 20 teams the 12 byes are split evenly between the two halves, so neither page of a two-page printout carries all of them. If you have 17 to 19 teams, a 16-team bracket with a few play-in games is often tidier; build that in the generator's Custom mode by adding a play-in game in front of the lowest seeds.
How many boards a 32-team event needs
| Format | Games | Fewest games a team plays | Waves | About |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | 31 | 1 | 5 | 2 h |
| Single elimination with a consolation bracket | 46 | 1 | 5 | 2 h 20 min |
| Modified double elimination (two games guaranteed) | 47 (+1) | 2 | 6 | 2 h 40 min |
| Double elimination | 62 (+1) | 2 | 10 | 4 h 20 min |
The first round has 16 games. With eight boards that is two waves; with four, it is four waves before round 2 can start, and every early round stacks up the same way. Our numbers for 20-minute games: single elimination takes about 2 h on eight boards and 3 h on four. Double elimination takes about 4 h 20 min on eight boards and 6 h 40 min on four, which is a full day. If the venue gives you four boards, single elimination or the consolation format (46 games) is the realistic choice.
Number the boards and call games by the game number on the bracket. The generator's "Up next" list shows every game that is ready, so two helpers with phones can keep all eight boards busy.
Seeding 32 teams
In a seeded bracket of 32, seed 1 meets seed 32, seed 16 meets seed 17, and the order is built so that the top two seeds can meet only in the final, the top four only in the semifinals and the top eight only in the quarterfinals. That protects the best teams from meeting early, which is fair when the seeding is based on something real: last season's standings, a ranking, or results from pool play.
Without anything to seed on, use a random draw. A middle option for leagues: play two or three Swiss rounds first (teams with the same record meet each other), then seed the bracket from the Swiss standings. The round robin generator runs Swiss rounds and pool play and sends the order to the bracket.
32-team bracket questions
How many games are in a 32-team bracket?
31 in single elimination (always one fewer than the number of teams). Double elimination needs 62 or 63. A consolation bracket brings it to 46, and modified double elimination to 47 or 48.
How many rounds do 32 teams play?
Five: a round of 32, a round of 16, the quarterfinals, the semifinals and the final.
How many byes do 24 teams need on a 32-line bracket?
Eight. Seeds 1 to 8 skip round 1, one in each eighth of the bracket, and the other 16 teams play 8 first-round games.
How do I print a 32-team bracket so the names are readable?
Print it on two pages: the top half and the bottom half of the main bracket, each landscape. Tape them side by side, or hang them next to each other with the final drawn between.
Smaller and bigger: 8 teams, 16 teams, 64 teams. Every other size is in the tournament bracket generator. Running a big day with more than one game? Large group games has ideas for the people waiting between rounds.
