16-team bracket
Sixteen is the size where format starts to matter: single elimination is 15 games, double elimination is 30, and on 4 versus 8 waves of play that is the difference between a morning and a whole day. Print a blank sheet, or start the bracket in our generator and run it from your phone.

The single elimination sheet fits one landscape page with room to write names. The double elimination sheet is denser: the losers' bracket has six rounds of its own, so print it landscape and write small, or use the generator and print the filled-in version, where names replace the blank lines.
Byes for 12, 13, 14 or 15 teams
Sign-ups rarely land on exactly sixteen. Anything from 9 to 15 teams uses the 16-line bracket, and the missing teams become byes for the top seeds. The table shows the round 1 games that are actually played in each case.
| Teams | Byes | Who gets one | Round 1 games | Single elim. games | Double elim. games |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 | 4 | seeds 1 to 4 | 8 v 9, 5 v 12, 7 v 10, 6 v 11 | 11 | 22 or 23 |
| 13 | 3 | seeds 1 to 3 | 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12, 7 v 10, 6 v 11 | 12 | 24 or 25 |
| 14 | 2 | seeds 1 and 2 | 8 v 9, 4 v 13, 5 v 12, 7 v 10, 3 v 14, 6 v 11 | 13 | 26 or 27 |
| 15 | 1 | seed 1 | 7 games among seeds 2 to 15 | 14 | 28 or 29 |
Byes are spread so each quarter of the bracket gets its share: with 12 teams the 4 byes sit one per quarter, and with 15 teams the lone bye goes to seed 1. Seeds come from your list order (put your strongest teams first) or from a random draw. With 9, 10 or 11 teams more than half the field gets a bye; at that point consider two groups and a short playoff instead.
Time planner for 16 teams
| Format | Games | Fewest games a team plays | Waves | About |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single elimination | 15 | 1 | 4 | 1 h 40 min |
| Single elimination with a consolation bracket | 22 | 1 | 4 | 2 h |
| Modified double elimination (two games guaranteed) | 23 (+1) | 2 | 5 | 2 h 20 min |
| Double elimination | 30 (+1) | 2 | 8 | 3 h 40 min |
A worked example: a church-hall cornhole fundraiser with 32 players in pairs, four sets of boards and 20-minute games. Single elimination finishes in about 1 h 40 min, but half the pairs are done after one game. Double elimination takes about 3 h 40 min with the same boards; with only two sets it stretches to 5 h 40 min, which is why many hosts pick the modified version (2 h 20 min on four boards) so every pair plays twice without the long losers' bracket.
The final rounds of any bracket use only one board, so extra boards save time early and none at the end. Schedule food or a raffle for the last hour.
Pool play or a straight bracket?
At sixteen teams there is a real alternative to elimination: four groups of four. Each group plays a round robin (six games per group, three per team), and the top two of each group fill an 8-team bracket. It costs about the same board time as double elimination and suits leagues, where teams want guaranteed games and a fair seeding for the knockout rounds.
- Choose single elimination for a quick bracket inside a longer party.
- Choose double elimination when the result matters and you have the boards.
- Choose pool play then a bracket when every team should play several times and you want group winners seeded properly.
- Choose the consolation bracket for kids' events: every team that loses its first game gets a second bracket and a second prize.
The round robin and pool play generator deals the groups, keeps the group tables with your tiebreakers, and hands the top teams to the bracket generator in cross-seeded order (group A's winner meets another group's runner-up).
16-team bracket questions
How many games does a 16-team bracket need?
Single elimination: 15. Double elimination: 30, plus one if the grand final goes to a second game. A consolation bracket for first-game losers makes it 22; modified double elimination 23 or 24.
How many rounds is a 16-team bracket?
Four in the main bracket: 8 first-round games, then the quarterfinals, semifinals and final. A team needs four straight wins.
How do byes work with 12 teams in a 16-team bracket?
Four lines stay empty, so seeds 1 to 4 skip round 1 and wait for the winners of 5 v 12, 8 v 9, 6 v 11 and 7 v 10. One bye lands in each quarter of the bracket.
Is pool play better than double elimination for 16 teams?
They take about the same number of games. Four groups of four play 24 group games, then the top two from each group play an 8-team bracket of 7 games: 31 in all, against 30 or 31 for double elimination. Pool play guarantees every team three games; double elimination guarantees two but never knocks a team out on one bad game.
Other sizes: 8 teams, 32 teams, 64 teams, or any count in the bracket generator. Need to split a crowd into pairs first? The random team generator does it fairly. For a whole day of games, see large group games.
